KARACHI, January 30, 2020: The 9th IPR Enforcement Coordination Committee meeting in Karachi was held on Thursday. Mr. Muhammad Irfan Tarar, Director General, Intellectual Property Organization (IPO-Pakistan) chaired the meeting.
The meeting termed counterfeiting and piracy a crime against innovation and creativity and expressed the resolve that the issue would be dealt relentlessly and all out efforts would be made for the development of genuine businesses in the country. Initiatives will be taken for Genuine business development of Karachi region. Export of local products will be enhanced by protecting and enforcing IPRs in the region.
Addressing the meeting, Mr. Tarar said enforcement of IP rights through designated law enforcement agencies, i.e. Police, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and Pakistan Customs etc. is one of the key functions of IPO-Pakistan. Committee in Karachi is working since 2006 and it was 9th meeting of the Committee.
It was decided that capacity building programs for LEAs and awareness activities for business community will be conducted in Karachi region for effective IPR enforcement and genuine business development.
The landmark decision in the meeting was to give permanent membership to the Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the committee.
Earlier, Mr. Muhammad Ismail, Director (Enforcement), IPO-Pakistan gave detailed presentations over the enforcement of IPRs.
The meeting was attended by senior officers of Pakistan Customs, Sindh Police, Sindh Food Authority, Health Department and representatives of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WCCI) Karachi.
